Proposed English Topic

In the sports world, there have been several lockouts because players and managers cannot come to an agreement in regards to salaries. Between the NFL and NBA there have already been 2 major lockouts this year. Although the NFL managed to come to an agreement with its players before the start of the season, the NBA season has already been cut by several games because the NBA and NBPA cannot come to an agreement over a 2.5% difference in salary (50/50 split as apposed to 52.5/47.5 split). My paper will talk about why I think it is rediculous that something so minor is causing such a major dispute in the sports world and why both sides need to come to an agreement soon because they're losing more money than they are gaining by cutting these games.

  1. Definitely a sports fan's topic. You'll have to go really in depth to explain to those who have no idea about it or what's going on. You should definitely touch on why both sides are being so stubborn. The owners are being so stubborn because with the old agreement the league was actually losing money and many of the player's proposed agreements would force them to lose money as well.

  2. I'm not really into sports at all so I can't say much about this topic. I just think that it is absolutely ridiculous that they get paid so god damned much to just play a couple of games. Just accept the changes and play the game, right? Right.

  3. THANK YOU!! Finally someone has said something about this! I consider myself a huge sports fan but this is just ridiculous. As a professional athlete you have a God given talent that me and many others out there would do almost anything for. I wouldnt even need to be paid that much money I would just be happy playing at that level.

  4. Sorry but I don't know anything about what goes on in sports so I can't be all that helpful here. I do know that pro athletes make huge money though so I can agree that a 2.5% difference is not something to be upset about.

  5. I don't know much when it comes to the topic of sports, but it is interesting that these sports player who make plenty of money are complaining about their saleries. I do agree that there are biggers problems in the world than sports teams fighting over such small and unimportant things.

  6. Here's why I'm ok with professional athletes making as much as they do. I do agree taht 2.5 percent is stupid and they should settle. But the reason they make millions is because the NBA NHL MLB and other professional sports leagues are pretty much the only true monopolies in America today. What does that mean? It means they make all of their own money, the government is not involved one ounce. So that is the same thing as you going out, putting on a show for family and friends, and making millions of dollars for it. If people are willing to pay you, and you earned the money, whose to say you don't deserve that much. It doesn't hurt the government one ounce, it doesn't affect the economy one ounce, they do it all themselves. They have their own system of money. You don't want them to get paid so much, don't go to their games, and don't buy their shirts.

  7. I agree with ADBJ, but I'm going to try and hide my own feeling about who is right and who is wrong in this paper and really just try to focus on this from an economical view before diving into the arguments of either side.

  8. Do you think this collective bargaining issue b between owners and employees is bigger tahn just the sports world? Can it tell us anything about the kind of attacks on collective bargaining we are seeing in Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Pennsylvania among other states?
